Optical Petrology/Petrography allows for the analysis and characterisation of minerals through visual interpretation with a petrographic microscope.  A powerful tool when used in conjuction with XRD and/or XRF, samples are mounted onto thin sections or grain sections for analysis.  Some of the characteristics that can be determined include:

 

• Identify minerals and weight percentage (based on point counts)
• Determine rock type
• Determine crystallization sequence

• Porosity
• Deformation history
• Weathering/alteration
